Estimate your dog's age in human years based on its size and age.
Convert your dog's age to human years using modern research-based formulas for small, medium, large, and giant breeds.
A dog age calculator is a tool that tells you how many years your dog has lived in human years. This helps pet owners learn more about their dog's stage of life and gives them information about their dog's health needs, physical and mental growth, and expected lifespan.
Our Dog Age calculator uses modern veterinary research that takes into account your dog's size and age. Unlike the old "multiply by 7" rule, this method recognizes that:
First 2 years: Age × 12.5
After 2 years: 25 + (Age - 2) × 4.5
First 2 years: Age × 10.5
After 2 years: 21 + (Age - 2) × 5.5
First 2 years: Age × 9
After 2 years: 18 + (Age - 2) × 7
First 2 years: Age × 7.5
After 2 years: 15 + (Age - 2) × 9
First 2 years: 2 × 10.5 = 21 human years
Remaining 1 year: 1 × 5.5 = 5.5 human years
Total: 21 + 5.5 = 26.5 human years
Result: A 3-year-old medium dog ≈ 26.5 human years
The "multiply by 7" rule doesn't take into account how quickly a dog grows up in its first few years or how different breeds age at different rates. Recent studies show that dogs age quickly at first, then slow down.
Larger dogs have faster metabolic rates and cellular aging processes. They also reach physical maturity sooner and typically have shorter lifespans than smaller breeds.
This calculator uses the most up-to-date veterinary research to give you a much more accurate estimate than older methods. But each dog is different because of their health, genetics, and way of life.
Yes! Choose the size category that best matches your dog's adult weight. If you're unsure, consult with your veterinarian about your dog's expected adult size.
The calculator works best for dogs that are older than one year because the aging formulas are based on how puppies grow up. For puppies younger than a year, it's better to look at developmental milestones than how old they are in human years.
